Russell J. Nieman age 84; of Houghton Lake Heights; passed away at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City on Wednesday February 1, 2012. Russell was born on November 4, 1927 in Riga, Michigan; to Otto & Bessie (Walters) Nieman. He served in the US Army during WWII. He married Barbara Gaige on June 22, 1946 in Adrian. The couple moved to the Houghton Lake area over 36 years ago from Blissfield. He was a member of the Houghton Lake United Methodist Church, Houghton Lake American Legion and also worked for Pine View Golf Course for many years. Russell is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Barbara Nieman of Houghton Lake Heights; Son; Tom (Peggy) Nieman of Blissfield, Son; Martin (Patricia) Nieman of Evart, Son; Albert (Karilyn) Nieman of Blissfield, Son; Duane (Donna) Nieman of Houghton Lake Heights, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, Brother; Howard (Violet) Nieman of Toledo, Brother; Junior (Barbara) Nieman of Adrian, Sister; Betty Enders of Adrian, Sister; Doris Sallows of Jasper. He was preceded in death by his parents, Brothers; Arthur Nieman and Herb Nieman and Edward Nieman and Sisters; Nora Knoblauch and Geraldine Nieman. A visitation is scheduled at Christler Funeral Home-Houghton Lake Chapel on Sunday February 5, 2012 from 2-6 PM. The funeral is scheduled to take place at Houghton Lake United Methodist Church located at 7059 W. Houghton Lake Drive, Houghton Lake, Michigan 48629 on Monday February 6, 2012 at 11 AM, Rev. Tom Anderson will conduct the service. Burial will take place at Roscommon Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Houghton Lake United Methodist Church Ina Brunson Camp Fund.
