Russell L. Smith, 80, Fortville, Indiana passed away August 6, 2007 at St. John's Medical Center, Anderson, Indiana.
He was born February 15, 1927 in Oaktown, Indiana.
He was a Fortville and Pendleton area resident for 52 years.
He retired as an operator from Conrail and New York Central Railroad in 1980 after 30 years service.
He was a World War Two Navy veteran and a 51 year member of Pendleton American Legion Post #117.
An avid horseman Russell's avocation was harness racing. His horses have trained and raced at Hoosier Park. He was a longtime member of the US Trotting Association; Indiana Horse Racing Comission; and Indiana Standardbred Association.
Survivors include his wife, Edith (Manning) Smith; daughter, Carolyn (husband, Bob) Carson of Wexford, PA; step daughter, Valerie (husband, Peter) Nye of Arlington, VA; brother, John Smith of Pendleton; sister, Rosemary Hale of Tere Haute; and three grandsons, Trever Nye, Adam Carson, and Alex Carson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Edward and Clara (Rooksbury) Smith, and a brother, Paul Smith.
