COLUMBIA Ruth Bundrick Jenkins went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 23, 2011. Born May 12, 1925 in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Olin Wyse and Minnie Lane Bundrick. She lived in Newberry for her early childhood. After moving to Columbia, she was an honor student at Dreher High, where she edited the school newspaper. She graduated from the University of South Carolina in Education and received her master's degree a year later.
In the Columbia community, she taught in Richland School District One, was president of Church Women United, secretary of the board of Alston Wilkes Society, president of the Auxiliary of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and president of the Newberry College Women's League. She was a volunteer at Providence Hospital Pastoral Care, Lutheran Hospice, and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her children, Anne Jenkins Bennett and her husband, Dr. Jerome Vincent Bennett, of Spartanburg and Olin Bundrick Jenkins of Columbia. Also surviving are her sister, Barbara Bundrick Clark of Columbia and her in-laws, Doris and Ray Guest of Sumter.
She was the proud grandmother of Jerome Vincent Bennett, Jr. and wife, Megan, of Columbia and Cynthia Lane Bennett of Spartanburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. H. Harrison Jenkins, who was a professor at the University of South Carolina and Senior Editor of the State-Record Company.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2011 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
