Ruth M. Curtin, 87, a resident at Vernon Hall for the past three years, formerly of 29 High Street died peacefully early Tuesday afternoon July 17, 2012 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. Mrs. Curtin was born in Brattleboro on July 30, 1924 the daughter of James and Alice (Miles) Denning. She was raised and educated in Brattleboro attending Saint Michael's Parochial School and graduating with honors from Saint Michael's High School, Class of 1942. On October 5, 1946 at Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church she was married to James Patrick Curtin who at the time was actively serving in the U.S. Army. For several years the couple lived in both France and Germany before returning to the United States where they settled in Burlington. Following the death of her husband on September 18, 1972 she moved back to Brattleboro and worked in early education at the Brattleboro Child Development on Western Avenue where she was fondly known as "Grammie Ruth". She retired in 1999. During her earlier years she was employed at the former Hotel Brooks and by the U.S. Selective Service Board. She was a devoted homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great granddaughter. A devout Catholic, she was a communicant at Saint Michael's Catholic Church and a former parishioner at Saint Anthony's Parish in Burlington. Among all of her travels, Mrs. Curtin's favorite destination was Ireland where she visited in 2000. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed Irish cultural events. Survivors include, three sons, David Curtin and his wife Edna of Barnet, Timothy Curtin and his wife Gerry of Vernon and Michael Curtin and his wife Gail of Gales Ferry, CT, two daughters, Paula Tarrant and her husband David of West Newton, Mass and Barbara Curtin of Burlington. Additionally she leaves her five grandchildren, Daniel, Kevin, Meghan, Bridget and Sean, her great granddaughter Juliet and many nieces, nephews and several cousins. She was predeceased by one brother, Miles Denning; three sisters, Jane Chapman, Bunny Johnson and Sr. Barbara Denning, R.S.M.; and a granddaughter, Katie Curtin. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Anthony's Church in Burlington with Rev. Daniel Jordan, celebrant. Committal Rites and burial will follow in Resurrection Park in South Burlington where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral home on Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Curtin's name may be made to St. Brigid's Kitchen 47 Walnut St., Brattleboro, VT 05301 or to the Reformer Christmas Stocking, P.O. Box 703, Brattleboro, VT 05302-0703.
