Ruth M. Dill departed this life on May 7, 2011 at Park Place Center, Monmouth Junction, New Jersey. To be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord…II Corinthians 5:8 Daughter of the late Charles and Ruth Harvin Dicks, Ruth was born on January 7, 1932 in Cranford, New Jersey. She attended both the Cranford and Elizabeth School Systems and was a graduate of the Batton High School Class of 1949. Ruth married Ralph Dill, Sr. on Valentine's Day in 1954. Ruth was employed by the Union County Board of Social Services for 31 years and retired as a fiscal supervisor in 1996. Before joining the Union County Board of Social Services she was employed by the Bayonne Naval Base and the Internal Revenue Service. Ruth was an accomplished musician at an early age. She attended Altenberg Piano House in Elizabeth, NJ and soon after became a dynamic pianist and organist. She attended many workshops and private lessons and her instructors were amazed at how quickly she caught on. By the age of 18 she became the instructor. She began teaching classical and gospel music and held private voice lessons. A wrong note by a student resulted not in a smirk, but in a smile. She loved to laugh. As a young adult she became a choir director and musician for many years. Ruth and her sister Mattie often played the organ and piano side by side at Mount Teman. The choir often marched up the aisle singing one of her favorite songs, "We've Come This Far By Faith". Affectionately known as Gam by her grandchildren, Ruth was most happy spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. She loved having everyone over for dinner. She was the "go to" person of the family who stayed in touch with all the relatives. Always with her husband, Ralph, she enjoyed shopping, going to the theater and attending her grandchildren's activities. Ruth was a long time member of the NAACP, The People of Color Organization, and The Urban League. At an early age she gave her life to Christ and became a member of the Greater Mount Teman A.M.E. Church in Elizabeth, NJ. After moving to Scotch Plains, NJ in 1973, she and her family became devoted members of St. Johns Baptist Church in Scotch Plains. Ruth was a member of the Gospel Chorus, the Inspirational Chorus, the Senior Citizen Ministry and the Women's Ministry. The annual Tea Party became one of her favorite outings with the women of the church. Ruth leaves to cherish her memories, her devoted husband of fifty-seven years, Ralph Dill, Sr., son, Ralph Dill, Jr. (Denise); daughter, Susan Smallwood (Kevin); brother, Wilbur Dicks (Helen); sister, Mattie Walker; sister-in-law, Georgia Hadley; grandchildren, Whitney Corbett (Myles), Derek Smallwood, Catherine Dill, Kyle Dill, Courtney Dill and Nicholas Dill; step grandchildren, Dana Williams, Michael Williams, Maia Williams, Landy Butler, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away… Revelations 21:4 This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Ruth M.
