Mrs. Ruth Mae Chastang

Carol and Joanie - I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. I always remember her absolute calm while all the "little" kids ran around, especially before your dad got home from work. I know you will miss her. She was a wonderful lady.

She was always the kind of person you wanted to be around, kind and loving, a nurturing person. Rest in peace to Ruth May Chastang, a truly loving person, and I say a miracle worker. How else could she have raised eight kids?

You may know my grandmother as Ruth Chastang but she will always be Pommy to me. My grandfather was serious, hard working, & strict. Pommy was the total opposite, sweet and soft spoken. I have a few memories of my grandmother that I would like to share. I remember her always in the garden putting clothes on the line so they can dry, even though she had a dryer. She was always reading a book, every time I saw Pommy

I have a few memories of my grandmother that I would like to share. I remember her always in the garden putting clothes on the line so they can dry, even though she had a dryer. She was always reading a book, every time I saw Pommy she had a book in her hand. She also invented the Chastang lean, which she passed down to most of her children. The Chastang lean is when you fall asleep sitting up with your eyes open. So I never knew if she was asleep or awake, that made it hard for me to be a bad kid cause I always felt like she was watching me. LOL. My grandmother had a GREAT life, she didn’t have to work a job, raised 8 beautiful children, & traveled the world! March 2 1923 was her grand opening November 11, 2011 was her grand closing.

Dear Pomey,

The love I have for you is enormous. I do not want to talk about it, I would rather show! Your whole life was a demonstration on how someone should live! Caring! Loving! Courageous! You did not talk about it, you were about it. Your actions spoke louder than these here words. Anyone who had the pleasure to be around you and experience you should be honored.

I am grateful that I was able to be so close to you as a grandson and friend!

In all my years, I never recall my grandmother getting upset with me, which is amazing! I think out of all the grandkids I spent the most time with her….I remember her walking to pick me up from St. Anselem after school, or keeping me at home with her on days when I was sick, but telling me to “Hurry up and clean up that mess and turn off that TV before your grandfather gets home kid!” As a child, I got a kick out of her accent and would beg her to say “park the car in Harvard’s yard” It always tickled me how she use to call me by “Joanie, Julie, julian…whatever ya name is kid!”

As an adult, I was fortunate to live with her and my daughter which is her great granddaughter. She truly enjoyed having Taylor around! Although she suffered from Dementia, both Taylor and Giselle gave her new moments to remember. While she might not recall their names at times, her face would light and smile when she saw either one of the girls. I can still hear her now saying to Tay “hey I know you! I know your mother!” They would all laugh. The time we spent living with Pomey created a very unique relationship between a great grandmother and her only great grandchild. I am very thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to truly know Pomey!

Our thoughts & prayers are with all of Aunt Ruth's family. May they always treasure the beautiful soul, kind, loving heart, & wonderful wit that made Aunt Ruth such a special person. She was a great combination of her Mom & Dad which made her so much fun to spend time with. She is home now, welcomed & embraced by family, friends . God bless her always as she reaps the rewards of a God fearing life.
