Mrs. Ruth Smith, age 84, went to sleep in Jesus on Sunday, April 29, 2007 and is now awaiting the resurrection. Born in Iowa, Ruth grew up during the Depression. Even as a little girl she had a mischievous side, and this continued throughout her life. While in her early 20's she hitch-hiked from Iowa to Grand Rapids so she could be with relatives. Ruth met her husband, George who had just returned from WWII, and they were married in June of 1946. They settled on part of the family farm, and Ruth was a stay-at-home mom. Together as a family, they raised cattle, horses, and sheep and had a garden big enough for everyone. Ruth would can the produce, and once a month she made enough bread to last for a while. For lunch she would use her homemade bread and fry it (Boy, was that good!). She lovingly taught her children about independence and the virtues of honesty, integrity, and loyalty. Ruth is survived by her children, Stephen and Helen Smith of Sand Lake, Jacquelyn and Jerry Welch of Barbeau, MI, Lori and Keith Armock of Sand Lake, Bryan and Debra Smith of Howard City, and Ginny Smith of Sand Lake; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Hendrene Alsum of Randolph, WI, Mrs. Grace VanderKooi and her husband, William of Lynden, WA, and Mrs. Doris Johnson of King George, VA; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George who was Postmaster of Sand Lake, and granddaughters, Kimberly Moody and Baby Welch, and several siblings.
