Samuel Wayne Jones, 63, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away in Virginia Beach General Hospital Wednesday night. Sam was born in Camden County, NC to Marie Harrison and the late Samuel Pierce Jones, on August 30, 1948. The family moved to Norfolk where he attended Sherwood Elementary, Norview Junior High and graduated Norview High School in 1966. Sam worked at the Portsmouth Shipyard until he was 21 and eligible to join the Norfolk Fire Department. He retired from the fire department in 1997. He owned and operated the Reef Lounge/Restaurant on Shore Drive from 1998 until 2007. "Big Sam" was always a sports enthusiast. He played on the Norview football, basketball and softball teams. He played "industrial league" softball for the NFD, and basketball on the fire/police intramural league. In more recent years he enjoyed playing golf and was always ready for a good tournament. It didn't matter if he was good at the game; it was the camaraderie of playing a sport with his friends that provided the biggest reward. Additionally he is a member of the Ocean View Democratic and Social Club and The Lynnhaven Sports Club. As outgoing and burly as he was, the sanctuary of his home always nurtured plants, flowers and critters; and contained a prolific collection of lighthouses and firefighter memorabilia. Sam was preceded in death by his father, Samuel P. Jones. He is survived by his wife, Rosalind Jones; his mother, Marie Davis and stepfather Charles of Perry, GA. Sisters: Janice Horne of Covington, GA, Shelia Robertson of Perry, GA, Dora Cruce and her husband Mike of Loganville, GA; several nieces, nephews and grandnephews. Sam will be missed by his family; his beloved Labrador retriever, Sir Duke who was his constant companion; and a host of very close friends many of whom have been friends since elementary school. Services will be held in Virginia Beach at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel and officiated by Christ Sanctified Holy Church. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 7, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. Following the Virginia Beach services, Sam's final resting place will be in Perry, GA. Services will be at the Christ Sanctified Holy Church. There will be visitation on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at 7 p.m.; a funeral service and interment on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated for The American Cancer Society, or Christ Sanctified Holy Church in either Chesapeake, VA or Perry, GA.
