Sena (Gezina) Jacobson went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 24, 2012. She was born in Nobleford, Alberta to William and Johanna Gunst. As a child, "Seen" immigrated to the US and attended grade schools in the Lynden and Sumas areas. During her teenage years and early twenties she picked hops and worked in a furniture factory in Yakima. "Seenie" first met her future husband, Wendall Jacobson, at the Sumas skating rink. They married on May 22, 1946, after Wendall returned from serving in WWII. The couple started farming in Northwood with Uncle John Bruns. Later they purchased a farm on "the Guide" from Grandma Bruns where they dairy farmed for 43 years. They spent their retirement years in Lynden. In August 2011 Sena moved to Meadow Greens where she made many new friends. While her children were growing up she supported them by serving as a 4-H leader and with the Ebenezer Mother's Club. Sena was a longtime member of Third Christian Reformed Church and over the years helped out in many ways. At age 89 she still participated as part of a Prayer team and in a Bible study. Our mom loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables. Dahlias were her favorite both on the farm and in retirement. She delighted in propagating marigolds, nasturtiums and other annuals from seed, watching them grow. As she raised her children she grew a huge vegetable garden. Over the summer and into fall she canned jars and jars of fruits and vegetables. When mom and dad moved to "town," picking, freezing and sharing her raspberries became another favorite. Sena is survived by daughters, Yvonne Starkenburg of La Conner, June (Bill) Livermore of Seattle, Jean (Keith) Rasmussen of Burlington, Anita (Ron) Van Loo and son, Loren Jacobson of Lynden. She is also survived by brother Herm Gunst and sister-in-law, Bernice Brandt. Mom enjoyed her grandchildren, Wade and Kent Starkenburg, Brett and Aaron Livermore, Karene Hoffman, Sheila De Haan, Vanessa Eldridge, Kurt Rasmussen, Jarren and Brennan Van Loo, Ashleigh, Jordan, Jonathan Jacobson and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendall, son-in-law, Stan Starkenburg, brother, Ed Gunst and sisters, Min Nelson and Rita Gunst. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, April 28, 9:15 am, followed by a 10:00 am celebration service at Third Christian Reformed Church in Lynden. Memorials may be made to Lynden Christian Schools, 417 Lyncs Drive, Lynden, WA 98264.
