Sherman Potts, age 62, of Elma, Washington passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 after nearly a two year battle with cancer. The memorial service will be Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 3:00 pm at Grace Community Church in Elma. Another gathering will be held in California at a later date. Sherman was born on October 8, 1947 in Crawfordsville, Indiana to Keith and Letha Potts. His early life was spent on the farm in Indiana before the family moved to the Oregon coast where his dad was the pastor of rural churches. Sherman graduated from Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, Oregon and from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He met his wife Alice (Herndon) from Alief, Texas while attending Moody and they married on June 7, 1970. Later that year, they joined Villiage Missions and served as pastor in rural churches in Eddyville, Oregon and Igo, California. In 1982, Sherman began a career with the Shasta County Sheriff's Office in California. He was assigned to work in the Burney Sub station. He worked patrol and detective duty and was a member of the SWAT team. After retirement from law enforcement in 2001, Sherman and Alice moved to Elma and rejoined Villiage Missions. This lead to service as interim pastor of Washington churches in Anacortes, Skykomish, McKenna, Dalkena, and McCleary. Outside of his work, Sherman loved being in the out doors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Since his early teen years, Sherman had a motorcycle to ride, and especially enjoyed his Harley. In the last 10 years, he has enjoyed riding the trails on his horse Peso. Sherman loved the Lord and his family. Besides his wife Alice, he is survived by his mother Letha Potts of Spokane, his son Vince (& Darcy) Potts of Elma, his daughter Valerie (& Chad) Fensler of Portland, OR, grandchildren, (Grace and Tucker Potts and Grant Fensler), his sister Laura McConahy of Spokane and his brother Garry Potts of Lewiston, ID. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sherman Potts Memorial Missionary Fund at Grace Community Church (P.O. Box 537 Elma, WA 98541) or to Harbors Home Health & Hospice (201 7th St. Hoquiam, WA 98550)
