Sherry Lucille Grummert passed away in her home on Friday, November 2, 2012. She went peacefully, with a smile on her face, surrounded by many of her loving family members.
Born in Chehalis, Washington on March 5, 1947 she had lived primarily in Arcata for the past 50 years. She spent her life connecting with and serving others in many various capacities. From her early years as a babysitter and a candy striper, to her years as a telephone operator, she developed a very strong work ethic. This work ethic served her well as she moved into her first career, working for Pacific Bell, where she worked for nearly 20 years. She took great pride in her work and, through her industry, was able to become a well-respected mid-level manager. With the closure of Pac Bell's Eureka billing and customer service offices, she was able to begin a second career in 1992 as a parish secretary for St. Mary's Catholic Church in Arcata. It was here that she truly found her life's calling. She lived a life of service and was always ready to help someone else out, and it was this job that provided her with many opportunities to help and to counsel and to serve. She continued to work right up until the day before she was diagnosed with cancer.
Sherry loved life, she loved her family, and she loved to golf (when she wasn't hating it). She loved "getting together to play cards" with so many good friends over the years. She had a great sense of humor, and if you cracked through her sometimes tough exterior, you would find lots of laughter and love. For someone who claimed to be an introvert, she brought joy and happiness to so many people in her world.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister and best friend, Beverly Giacomini, as well as her wonderful father, Herman Steffen. She is survived by her loving husband Clifford Grummert of Arcata as well as the following special people in her life: her mother Helen Steffen of Arcata; her son Michael and his wife Carrie of Wheatland, CA; her son Matthew of Arcata and his friend Julia Jury of Hoopa, CA; her sisters (and their spouses)-Evelyn and Harry Carson of Aberdeen, WA; Debra and Ron Meyers of Arcata; Catherine and Tim Miller of La Mesa, CA; Christine and Jeff Vahldick of Roseville, CA; and Annette Steffen of San Diego, CA; her brothers (and spouses) Bill and Julie Steffen of Tenino, WA; Bob and Nancy Steffen of Rhonert Park, CA; David Steffen of San Anselmo, CA; and Dan and Stephanie Steffen of McKinleyville, CA; her grandchildren Emma, Tiersa, Scott, Porter, and Eliza Grummert of Wheatland, CA; and 20 nieces and nephews.
There will be a Rosary held in her honor Wednesday, November 7 at 7 PM at St. Mary's Church in Arcata. The memorial mass will take place at 1 PM on Thursday, November 8 also at St. Mary's Church.
The family has requested that, in lieu flowers, a donation be made in Sherry's name to Hospice of Humboldt or to St. Mary's Church in Arcata. All arrangements are under the care and direction of Paul's Chapel in Arcata. To leave messages and condolences for the family please visit www.paulschapel.com
