Shirley T. Hansen, 87, passed away peacefully in her home on February 17, 2009 surrounded by family. She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on September 25, 1921 to Edward and Mary Luella Thomas. Shirley graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943 with a BA degree and worked at the FBI in Washington, D.C., during World War II. She returned to Minnesota where she met her husband, Richard (Dick) T. Hansen. They were married June 26, 1948. Throughout their marriage they lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri. She made many friends in each new city - friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Shirley was a skilled draftsperson in her career outside the home and worked in several positions as the first woman hired in that capacity. She was a talented homemaker who enjoyed raising her family. Her love of nature and wildlife is a life-long gift that she has handed down to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved family vacations at Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota, fishing at nearby Iowa lakes and flying kites, especially on the beaches in California. Shirley had many outside interests, including swimming, gardening and bridge. She was also an excellent seamstress and knitter as is evidenced by her numerous Iowa State Fair ribbons.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband (Dick) in 1993, parents, brother and sisters. She is survived by her three children: Kris and (Don) MacCubbin of Cupertino, California; Sharon and (Steve) Klaus of Urbandale, Iowa; and Mike Hansen of Urbandale, Iowa. Grandchildren: Lisa and (Tom) Sanford, Rob Bravo, Jennifer and (Steffen) Heins, Sandy and (Mike) Gustafson, Jon and (Shannon) Klaus, Sarah and (Caleb) Cutwright. Great grandchildren: Fisher, Ila, Morgan, Megan, Isaac, Gavin, Isabella, Paige, Owen, Joseph and Noah. Shirley was a remarkable woman who was loved by many and will be dearly missed by all who knew her – but her spirit will live on.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines followed by a gathering for family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Iowa Lions Eye Bank or Iowa Health Hospice.
