Sophia Lopez August 24, 1927 – November 4, 2011 Sophia Adams Lopez, 84, passed away Friday, November 4, 2011. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Lawrence Soler as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, November 7, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m., at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel. Sophia was born August 24, 1927, in Waco to George Adams and Modesta Fuentes Tristan. She was a 1947 graduate of Waco High School and one of the first females to receive the Madison Cooper Scholarship. Sophia received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Baylor University in 1956. She retired as Head Nurse of the Psychiatric Ward of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Houston. Sophia was a world traveler, visiting places such as Spain, Rome, Greece and Italy. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Eluterio Tristan; and three brothers. She is survived by her husband, Vincent Lopez, Sr.; four step-daughters, Gloria Jimenez, Rose Corujo, Margie Cintron and Estella Laguna; two step-sons, Vincent Lopez, Jr. and Victor Lopez; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Carmen Tristan, Menardo and Gloria Tristan and Reyes and Dorothy Tristan; one step-sister, Juanita Garcia; and numerous other family and friends. Pallbearers are Dominic Tristan, Carlos Tristan, Rodrigo Tristan, Josh Haley, Chris Jimenez and Daylor Lopez. Honorary pallbearers are Victor Fuentes, Jose Cintron, Johnny Ray Jimenez, George Jimenez, II, Phillip Corujo, John alex Lopez, Ruben Romo, Logan Romo, Noah Romo, Victor Nicolas Lopez and Andrew Tye. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Hillcrest Hospice for the care given Sophia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hillcrest Hospice.
