Steve Scallion, of Little Rock, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the age of 58.
He was an accomplished free-lance artist who influenced and delighted others through his music, paintings, sculptures,
cartoons, and graphic designs.

He is survived by: his beloved companion Pax Amere, cherished daughter, Cory and son-in-law David McCalman and granddaughter Paisley McCalman,
his mother Pat Scallion McMinn and step father Odis McMinn, his brother Lee and sister-in-law Mimi Scallion, his brother Ted and sister-in-law Jennifer Scallion,
and a host of family and friends from Pine Bluff, Little Rock, Bauxite, and Hot Springs, Ar.

Steve's Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 pm, September 26, 2011 at Griffin Leggett Forest Hills Funeral Home, 10200 Hwy 5 North, Alexander, AR (501)455-1067. Inurnment will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park.

I worked with Steve on a couple of projects and we became phone friends for a while. I enjoyed our talks about life the universe and everything and his warm heart. I was very sorry to hear of his passing. I hadn't talked to him in a while, but he was really on my mind last week. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I worked with Steve at the Democrat-Gazette, and admired him as a fellow cartoonist. Nobody could — can — ever will draw a 'possum like Steve. It's hard to tell my favorite story of Steve. But 1 of the things I'm remembering is the times we were in school @ Watson Chapel in Pine Bluff. We were going thru some tough times at Chapel because of the intergration thing. It wasn't anything to us as it was to our parents, but during those days it seemed that all the adults had some sort of argument going. Steve was having trouble saying what he wanted to say to ALL the adults so he came up with the idea of an underground newspaper to voice his opinions about it all. He was so good at drawing possums that it was naturally named the Pink Possum. Steve was a heck of a nice and funny guy and could always crack me up. In the 1980s, he, Rhonda Owen and I invented a dictionary game that we played regularly. We'd each turn to a random page and pick a word we didn't know then use all three of them in the most sensible sentence we could construct. Don't know how we got started or got the idea, but it was fun and creative, so it was probably Steve.

Our best sentence ever was "Always yell 'Gardyloo!' before defenstrating orts." (Look up the words.) When I returned to teaching journalism and creative writing, I made my students play our game to teach vocabulary and I always gave them our prize example.

You have my condolences. Steve was a one-of-a-kind.

I DON'T ACTUALLY REMEMBER HOW STEVE AND I MET BUT AS TEENAGERS WE WERE BEST FRIENDS HANGING OUT TOGETHER AND OF COURSE ALWAYS PLAYING MUSIC. sTEVE WAS A COUPLE OF YEARS OLDER THAN I SO WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL STEVE HAD MOVED TO LR AND HAD S HOUSE. I WOULD SPEND THE WEEKENDS WITH HIM AND WE PLAYED AND MADE MANY RECORDINGS ON HIS TEAC. ONE HOUSE HE HAD WE PLAYED IN THE BASEMENT AND THE ONLY ENTRY WAS DOWN A LADDER. WE CARRIED AMPS GUITARS DRUMS EVERYTHING DOWN THIS LADDER TO SET UP AND PLAY7. THEN ON SUN. AFTERNOON WE WOULD HAND EVERYTHING BACK UP THE LADDER .WHAT WE DID TO PLAY MUSIC. I STILL PLAY TODAY AND I'VE ALWAYS CREITED MY SKILL ON THE GUITAR TO HAVE COME FROM THE MANY MUSICIANS I'VE PLAYED WITH OVER THE YEARS SUCH AS STEVE. ALSO WE WOULD OCCASIONALLY COME... READ MORE →

Steve was a heck of a guy who could have me in stitches in no time. My favorite memory, though, was of the "dictionary game" he, Rhonda Owen and I used to play in the Democrat newsroom in the latter 1980s. (We made it up.) We'd each open a dictionary to a random page and pick a word we didn't know. Then we'd have to put all three of them into a fairly sensible sentence, or at least try. The best one we ever created was "Always yell 'Gardyloo' before defenestrating orts." We laughed ourselves silly every time we said it. But it makes perfect sense. (Look up the words.)

Steve lived down the hall from me in the dorm at the U of A Monticello. He caught some bats in a grocery bag at the campus library from a gutter drain. He brought the bats back to his dorm room and released them in the room. He kept them there for a few days until somebody found out about it and then he relased them by opening the window. I also remember he painted a picture of Jesus on the back of a coat of a friend of mine. It was very impressive. The last time i saw Steve was the spring semester of 1972. Steve was a very unique person and i will never forget him.
