Stuart Ryland Park, 87, died at his residence January 25, 2012, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, A. Griffin and Carrie Park; and a brother, A. Griffin Park, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Alverna (Verna); a nephew, A. Griffin Park III and wife Carolyn of Chesapeake, VA; a niece, Melody Somers of St. Mary's, GA. Also his loving step-children, Kent Taylor, Lynne Snyder and husband Neil; step-grandchildren, Christian Garthright, Bethany G. Duffy and husband Paul and Melissa Taylor Peters. Ryland served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and saw action in the North Atlantic and Pacific aboard the USS Cockrill, a destroyer escort. He later served on the USS Sanctuary in the Pacific where he took part in the occupation of Japan. He owned Park Construction Co. in Norfolk for over 50 years. Ryland and Verna were active participants in the reunion of the USS Cockrill each year. He was a member of two social clubs, The Executive Club and the Town Point Club. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel. The burial will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
