Sr. Sue Ann Shay, SND, 73, died October 15 in Greenwich Woods Health Center after a long illness. Born in New York City on May 22, 1936, she was the daughter of William Desmond Shay and Catherine (Sullivan) Shay. She graduated from Trinity College in Washington D. C. and Fordham University Law School in New York. After Sr. Sue Ann was admitted to both the NY and CT bar, she spent her professional life practicing law on behalf of disadvantaged people especially children and families. She worked at New York Legal Aid, New Haven Legal Assistance and Hartford Neighborhood Legal Services. In 1997, she was a founding member of Communities Law Center in Hartford sponsored by several communities of women religious.Always an advocate for justice causes, Sr. Sue Ann was active in the anti-nuclear war movement, anti-poverty initiatives, womens causes and non- violent peace efforts. She served on the Board of Trustees of Trinity University in Washington, D.C and was active in the Trinity University Alumnae Association. She also served on the Distribution Committee of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. For several years she was a mentor for Notre Dame Americorps Volunteers in Hartford. Working with the Benchmark Institute of California, she gave legal training sessions in different parts of the country. Attracted by the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur to serve the poor in the most abandoned places, she entered the community in 1975 living in communities in New Britain, West Haven and Hartford. At the time of her death she had been an active member of the community for 34 years. She leaves her brother, William Shay, Jr. of Greenwich, and her cousins, David Hathaway and Justin Hathaway, Jenna Hathaway Ewing and her Sisters in Notre Dame as well as her many colleagues, clients and friends. We are grateful to the staff of Greenwich Woods for the care and compassion they gave to Sr. Sue Ann. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated for her on Friday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church in Hartford. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 26 in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Sisters of Notre Dame, 468 Poquonock Avenue, Windsor, CT 06095. Carmon Windsor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
