HIRKALA – Susan (nee Duran), 87, of Paramus, passed away on May 19, 2013. Born in Passaic, Mrs. Hirkala was a Passaic High School graduate. She resided in Passaic until 1986 when she moved to Paramus. Mrs. Hirkala was employed with Prudential in Newark before starting a 26-year career at Beth Israel Hospital in Passaic, retiring from the Records Department. Mrs. Hirkala was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fair Lawn and volunteered at the Medical Library at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, John M. Hirkala in 1997; her parents, Meri and Michael Duran; two sisters, Mary (nee Duran) Marton and Anne (nee Duran) Stankiewicz; one brother, Michael Duran; and her best friend and Gemini twin, Anne Krupa. Survivors include: her devoted daughter, Patrice Hirkala Woods and her husband, William Woods of Paramus; her loving granddaughter, Kelly Ann Woods; and her nephews and nieces, Joel Stankiewicz, Dennis Stankiewicz, Marianne Coppola, Judy Zangara, Ken Marton, Mark Marton and Jeffrey Marton. Funeral services will be held Thursday 10:30 am from the Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton and 11:30 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 22-15 Broadway, Fair Lawn. Interment to follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton. Visiting will be Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 22-15 Broadway, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410 or Valley Home Care, 15 Essex Road, Paramus, NJ 07652.
