Brattleboro - Susan Quilhot Howe, 70, a long-time resident of Brattleboro died Thursday evening, February 2, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. She died peacefully, with family at her side. She was born in Amsterdam, New York on February 5, 1941 to Stephen Quilhot and Elizabeth Wendell Quilhot. The family moved to Brattleboro in 1951 when Susan was in 4th grade. She has remained a resident of Brattleboro ever since. During her childhood Susan spent many summers at Goose Rocks Beach in Maine. Her fond memories of those Maine summers remained with her throughout her life. She inherited her parent's love of skiing, and skied competitively on the Brattleboro High School ski team. She was a member of the junior ski patrol, the high school tennis team, and the West Brattleboro Congregational Church choir. She graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1959, and was soon employed by First Vermont Bank as a bookkeeper. In 1961 she married Russell Howe of Brattleboro, and together they raised two sons: Brian and Christopher. She was a devoted homemaker and mother, and kept the books for her husband's successful general contracting business. In 1982 she returned to work for Vermont National Bank at the operations center on Putney Road, where she remained employed until her retirement in 2007. She is remembered as a dedicated employee and compassionate coworker. Her love of Maine and the ocean led her to purchase a second home in Kennebunk Maine in 2000, where she spent much of her time during the warmer months of her retirement. Her other pastimes and interests include: reading, gardening, bowling, and a deep fondness for dogs. She supported numerous charities, and participated in walk-a-thons and bike-a-thons in Brattleboro and Boston in support of the American Cancer Society and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Ms. Howe leaves two sons: Brian Howe of Hinsdale, New Hampshire and Christopher Howe and wife Christine of Somerville, Massachusetts, and one grandson, Zachary Howe also of Somerville, Massachusetts. She also leaves her two beloved Golden Retrievers, Britney and Shiloh. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at Green Mountain Chapel of the Christian & Missionary Alliance with Pastor Bill Steele officiating. Respecting her final wishes, she will be laid to rest off the shore of Goose Rocks Beach this summer. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 121 Connor Way, Suite 240, Williston, VT 05495.
