Sus was born and raised in Belmont, CA. At the onset of World War II his family was sent to Tanforan Assembly Center in San Bruno and from there was sent to Topaz War Relocation Center in Utah. After the war his family moved to San Francisco, where he met and married Yuriko Okazaki. They moved to San Mateo and raised their four children. One of his first jobs after the war was at Simmons Mattress Company in the East Bay. On more than one occasion he commented that Simmons was one of the few locally owned companies to give Japanese Americans a chance to work and rebuild their lives. After leaving Simmons, Sus joined the Retail Clerks Union and worked in the Produce Departments of Purity, Mayfair, QFI and Petrini's Markets. He retired from Petrini's Market in 1988. His favorite pastime activities included tennis, bowling, golf and vacationing with the family. Sus enjoyed listening to and watching all types of sports and looked forward to participating in football pools.
