Brattleboro - Terrence E. Chapin known as "Terry" of Brattleboro, VT died unexpectedly Sunday morning at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. surrounded by his family. Terry was born in Brattleboro on October 28, 1946 to Malcolm Chapin and Erminie Marsh. He attended Leland & Gray Seminary graduating in 1964 and earned his engineering degree in 1968 through an apprenticeship program that was a collaboration between the Pratt & Whitney Division of United Aircraft in East Hartford, CT and the University of Hartford. After graduating he moved back to Vermont and was employed by Cersosimo Lumber Company in the construction division. With a desire to use his engineering background, he then worked for Valley Sprinkler during the restoration of the Brooks House in the 70's and then furthered his education in fire protection engineering which became his lifelong career and passion. In the late 70's he started T.E.C.C O. which he owned and operated until the mid 90's while he simultaneously pioneered, developed and marketed fire protection engineering software for the industry along with his business partners. Thereafter he started Chapin Consulting and Design. Throughout his career he was an active member of the American Fire Sprinkler Association, served on many committees and spoke at numerous conventions. At the time of his death he was Vice President of M.E.P. CAD, a software development company based in Reno, Nevada where he had worked since the late 90's with his very close friend and chosen brother, Joe Reghetti, Pres./CEO. He was one of the best fire safety designers in the country and a pioneer in computerization of fire sprinkler design. His extensive knowledge of the fire protection industry and software development were a unique combination that greatly assisted M.E.P. CAD in being recognized in the US and internationally as a leader in fire protection design software. Terry's biggest gift to all he touched was not only his selflessly imparting of his vast treasure-trove of knowledge but the kind and gentle way he interacted with everyone. His integrity and sincerity made him a true "gentlemen of the industry", and his warm smile always made everyone feel welcome. He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to know him both professionally and personally. Terry is survived by his beloved wife Christine Chapin and his two children, Michelle Chapin of Belchertown, MA and Melissa Chapin of Hadley, MA, and a granddaughter Kate, who he adored. He is also survived by his mother Erminie Marsh of Greenfield, MA, his step-mother Elaine Chapin of Newfane, and four siblings, Richard Chapin of Guilford, VT, Emma Michaels of North Carolina, Kenneth Marsh of Texas and Leslie Moody of Florida. He also leaves his brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Sheila Bartel, a treasured nephew William Bartel and his wife Kristen, and a grand-nephew Hayden, all of Williamsville, VT, and his dear friends Lenny Peduzzi, Joe Reghetti and Charlene Richards. He was predeceased by his father Malcolm Chapin. Terry was known for his kind heartedness and generosity to others, as well as his devotion to family and friends. An avid skier, he relished ski trips with his daughter Michelle and was affiliated with Maple Valley Ski Area for many years. He enjoyed golf, tennis, gardening and traveling the world. Terry loved animals and will be missed by his two canine companions, Marty and Murphy. As Terry requested there are no formal services. His family will be honoring his life in accordance with his wishes. The Terry Chapin Memorial Scholarship has been established in his honor to benefit a student pursuing a career in CAD, engineering or software programming/development. Memorial contributions can be directed to River Valley Credit Union, B.U.H.S. Career Center Branch, 70 Atwood Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301 in care of Donnette Hill.
