Theodore Frederick Cox, 81, of North Caldwell, NJ and Naples, FL passed away peacefully on Friday night after a courageous battle with Wegener's granulomatosis. He was born on August 17, 1928 in Montclair, NJ to Theodore Francis and Muriel Cox. Born in Montclair, Mr. Cox had lived in North Caldwell for 60 years. Founder and owner of the Cedar Grove Garden Center, Mr. Cox was also active in community affairs. He served on the North Caldwell Board of Education and Borough Council, and was a founding member of the Skating Pond Committee. He was a long-time member and past-president of the Cedar Grove Rotary Club. In 1956, he built the Bradford Bath and Tennis Club in Cedar Grove. He founded and served on the Board of Directors of the Cedar Grove Savings and Loan and, after their merger, on the Board of Sovereign Bank Inc. An avid golfer, Mr. Cox was a member of Upper Montclair Country Club for more than 30 years, and served on the Greens Committee both at UMCC and at Wilderness Country Club in Naples, Florida. He was a 1951 graduate of St. Lawrence University and an active supporting alumnus throughout his life. He graduated in 1947 from Montclair High School and took great pride in having been a part of Montclair High School's undefeated state championship football team. He was a beloved mentor to many young people who worked for him at the Cedar Grove Garden Center. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley; his daughters Wendy and Stacey and her husband Joe, his son Theodore and his wife Amy; his loving grandchildren Stephen, Theodore, Emily, Matthew, Nina, and Katie, and his sister Shirley Peterson of Sun City, Florida. Ted was one of a kind - feisty, forthright, devoted to family, and forever generous. Ted died as he lived, with incredible strength and dignity. His indomitable spirit will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 30 at 3 pm at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 271 Roseland Avenue, Essex Fells. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Agnes Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 65 Union Avenue, Little Falls, NJ 07424. Bizub-Parker Funeral Home, Little Falls is in charge of arrangements. Visit www.bizub.com for driving directions and online condolences.
