Thomas F. Rogers

Thomas F. Rogers of Huntsville, passed away at his home on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Visitation will be at Valhalla Funeral Home from 11:00 AM to 12:50 PM with services following at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Burial will be at Valhalla Cemetery in Huntsville.

Tom was born in Lexington, Kentucky. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Irick of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Tom was a graduate of Corinth High School in Kentucky where he was an outstanding basketball player. At the age of 18 he was drafted into the Army and attended the University of Georgia in an Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP). In 1943, as a member of the 54th Armored Infantry Battalion, a part of General Patton's Third Army, he served in France and Germany where he received the Silver Star for valor, the Purple Heart, and the World War II Victory medal Due to the injuries he sustained in the war, he spent 15 months rehabilitating at Camp Atterbury, In. Tom attended the University of Cincinnati majoring in accounting. Tom married Ilene Norvell in 1956 and moved with his family to Huntsville in 1964 where he was employed by the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA). He retired from Government Service after 33 years. Tom was a long time member of University Baptist Church serving on many financial and budget committees. He served as the treasurer of the elementary school PTA and was a member of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA). Tom enjoyed bowling and belonged to a bowling league for many years. In addition to bowling, Tom was an avid walker, walking at Madison Square Mall six mornings a week for over 20 years.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ilene Rogers; his daughter COL Neva Rogers and spouse Mark Shuler; and daughter Cathy Green; two granddaughters, Emma Green and Christina Green all of Madison, Alabama; a sister, Ann Taylor, and a brother, Walter Rogers, both of Cincinnati, Ohio. Three sister-in-laws, Geneva Norvell of Huntsville,AL, Audrey Norvell of Corbin, Kentucky, and Juanita Norvell of Pulaski, TN., and multiple nieces and nephews.
