Thomas J. Stone, a lifetime resident of West Scranton, passed away Thursday on his 86th birthday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. He is survived by his beloved wife, Zita Dean Stone. Wed on March 2, 1957, the couple were married for 54 years. Son of the late Thomas J. and Nora Doherty Stone, Thomas was educated at West Scranton High School, Class of 1944. He had served in the United States Navy during WWII and was called back into active duty once again during the Korean War. Upon his discharge, he was honored with the Asiatic Pacific, American Area, and the Victory Medals. In 1958, along with his wife, he founded Stone Office Equipment Company, Inc., in Scranton. Following his retirement, he served as a Purchasing Agent for the City of Scranton during the term of former Mayor, James McNulty. Active in the local community, he was an Executive Committee member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, a former Commander of the Catholic War Veterans, a former President of Young Democrats of Lackawanna County, and a former board member of both the American Red Cross and the Elm Park Housing Committee. A very devout Roman Catholic, he was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Church in West Scranton where he was also a longtime usher and a member of the church's Society of the Faithful. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, he had a special relationship with each one of his family. Known for his great humor and Irish wit, he will be forever missed. He is survived by his children, his three sons, T.J. Stone and wife Sheila of Scranton, Chris Stone and wife Joni of Clarks Summit, and Jamie Stone and wife Cathy of Chinchilla, and his daughter, Mary-Zita Stone and husband Paul Lukis of Scranton; ten grandchildren, Nora, Marla, Kara, Rachel, Courtney, Suzie, Maggie, Molly, Thomas and Matthew Stone; and a great granddaughter, Annabella Stone. A sister, Mary Stone, preceded him in death on May 26, 2009. His family would like to especially thank the Intensive Care Unit of Community Medical Center, the Special Care Unit of Regional Hospital, Dr. Martin C. Penetar and Dr. Glen D. Digwood for the extraordinary care they had given to Tom during his illness. Funeral services will begin on Monday at 9:15AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, West Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Church, 1403 Jackson Street, to be celebrated by Rev. Martin Boylan, Pastor. Interment with full military rites by both the AMVETS Honor Guard and the United States Navy will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Sunday between 2-5:00PM at the funeral home.
