Tranquilino Tasico Cuevas, was born July 6, 1929 in Malvar, Batangas, Philippines, the sixth of eight children to Vicente and Maria Cuevas. He passed away peacefully July 13, 2011. Tranquilino joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1952, and was stationed in Boston, MA where he participated in the rescue operation of the SS Andrea Doria in 1956. In 1957, he joined the Navy serving a tour in Vietnam, and served honorably until his retirement in 1985, attaining the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. After his military career, he served as an accounting specialist with COMNAVSURFLANT in Norfolk until his retirement in 1994. He received a bachelors degree in accounting from Far Eastern University, in Manila, Philippines, and an associates degree in banking and finance from Tidewater Community College. He continued his education at Old Dominion University. He is survived by his loving family, Aurora, his wife of 54 years; his children, Mr. and Mrs. Arnes and Connie Cuevas of Virginia Beach, VA, Dr. John and Mrs. Rorielyn C. Cawthorn of Virginia Beach, VA, Mr. Tranquilino L. Cuevas, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA and Mr. Dennis P. Cuevas and Mr. Timothy P. Loeffler, of Fairfax, VA. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Matthew S. Cuevas, Erin M. Cawthorn, Kristen C. Cawthorn, and Kai D. Cuevas. The family will receive friends for visitation at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1264 N. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2011, and Sunday, July 17, 2011. Funeral Mass will be Monday, July 18, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 1968 Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach, with interment at Princess Anne Memorial Park, 1110 N. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Virginia Chapter, 5540 Falmouth Street, Richmond, VA 23230.
