Vasilea (Viola) Alvanos Panos died February 1.
Vasilea, the beloved wife of deceased Sotirios (Steve) Panos and daughter of deceased Gust and Theano Alvanos, was born in Pelope, Mytelene, Greece in 1926.
Vasilea, along with her parents and sister, Anna, arrived in the United States through Ellis Island in 1926. After living in Shippensburg, PA from 1926-1935, her family settled in Annapolis where her parents ran a business on Main Street prior to her father's death. Throughout her youth, she attended Anne Arundel Public Schools and graduated in 1944 from Annapolis High School.
She was employed at the Naval Academy Engineering Experimental Station until 1946 when she married Sotiri and began her family. Later, from 1961-1991, she worked for the Maryland State Income Tax Division, and in 1962, her husband and she opened the Edgewater Tastee Freeze which closed in 1982.
As a parishioner of Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis, she taught Sunday School and served as a president of Agia Anna Philoptochos Society. She enjoyed volunteering on the numerous committees involved in baking and preparing for the church's festivals and dances. Viola's "taramosalata (roe) and finikia cookies" are her well known specialties. In 2008, the Philoptochos honored her and other members for 50 years of service with a donation to Anne Arundel Medical Center in which their names are posted in the lobby.
Viola was an active member of the Annapolis Ladies of the Elks Club #622. She loved playing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and always had Greek pastries or sweets for them. She was an avid knitter, making caps for newborns at the hospital, and also enjoyed puzzles, old movies, and traveling. After church on Sundays, family and friends frequently gathered at her home to visit and enjoy her delicious cooking.
Survivors include her three children and their spouses: A daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Arthur Veves of Millville, DE; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Evelyn Panos of Arnold; and another daughter and son-in-law, Theano and Robert Platt of Annapolis. Her six grandchildren are Adam and Steven Veves, Andrea Panos Sewitsky, Steve Panos, Tiffany Platt Steigerwalt, and Derek Platt.
Viewing will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 3, at John Taylor's Funeral Home, Inc., 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, at Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Rd., Annapolis, with internment at St. Demetrios Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to "Agia Anna" Philoptochos Society c/o Ss. Constantine and Helen Church, 2747 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD 21401, or Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy., Annapolis, MD 21401.
