Vaughn Lowell Patterson was born December 30, 1949 in Abilene, Kansas to proud parents, Elmer Wendell Patterson and Minnie Gandy Patterson. He was the youngest of five children from this union. Vaughn attended East High School and Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. He also attended the Air Traffic Training Academy in Lawton, Oklahoma.

He married Charlene Alford at the age of 17, before joining the US Army. He served in the US Army from February 13, 1968 through February 12, 1971. Vaughn fought in the Vietnam War from November 1968 through June 1970. He was awarded the National Defense Medal, two O/S Bars, Army Commendation Medal, Driver Badge, Good Conduct Medal and the Sharpshooter Rifle M-14 and M-16 award.

After the war, Vaughn worked for the US Postal Service in Wichita, Kansas. He made a career change to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Controller from April 1975 through January 2005. Vaughn was a proud and devoted member of the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees from 1980-2005. He served as a National Officer, Chapter President, and Regional President of the Southern Region and on the National Board. Vaughn retired from Federal Government service after a total of thirty-six (36) years.

He enjoyed most of all, being with family and friends. He liked to play any type of card game and Dominoes. Vaughn was also a licensed pilot for small Cessna airplanes. He loved horses, racing, building cars, photography, playing the piano and attending church.

In September of 1980, Vaughn married Donna McRae, and they had three children. They later took on five nieces and nephews to raise as their own. God blessed Vaughn and Donna to share thirty-one (31) years of marriage.

Vaughn Lowell Patterson age 61 went to be with the Lord on the evening of December 1, 2011. He had family at his bedside at the VA Hospital Hospice unit in Dallas, Texas.

Vaughn leaves to celebrate his life; wife, Donna; two sons, Vaughn Jr. (Lyris) and Justin; four daughters, Charlena, Glenda Mosby (Michael), Karen and Monique; eleven grandchildren; one great grandson; two brothers, Lawrence and David Patterson (Sandra); twin sisters, Sharon Collins and Karen Holt (Ronald); and a host of nieces and nephews.

With the passing of Vaughn Lowell Patterson, God continues to BLESS his family with JOY and wonderful memories of him.
