Hayes: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 2 Timothy 4:7. Vernon Edward Jenkins, 82, went to be with his Lord in Heaven on November 27, 2011 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Gloucester with his family by his side. He was born April 9, 1929. Vernon was a member of Union Baptist Church and graduated from Achilles High School in 1946. He served in the U S Army during the Korean War. Vernon worked at Newport News Shipyard, was a waterman, and made crab pots for the watermen before retiring. He enjoyed going to car races with his wife, and loved to go hunting with his many friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Bessie Jenkins; brothers, Herman, Stanley, James, Elwood, Leroy, and Everett; and sisters, Pearl and Jennie.
He is survived by:
His loving wife, Dorothy, which he was married to for 60 years. His four daughters, Barbara Campbell (Bud), Teresa Haynes (Roy), Brenda Jenkins and Lisa Wolak (Mike). One grandson, Ronald Haynes (Annette) of Deltaville, VA; step great grandchildren, Tiffany, Savannah and Denise; and a sister Edith Thurman of Norfolk.
A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the home of his daughter, Barbara Campbell, 2020 Hammond Court, Hayes, Va 23072.
