SMITH,VERNON J. 94, of Clearwater, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, under the care of Haven Hospice and family in Gainesville.

He was born in Walnut City, IA and moved from Davenport, IA to Florida in 1960, where he worked for General Electric until his retirement. A gentle man, with big hands and an even bigger heart, he was an avid golfer and fisherman and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He played regularly at the Glen Oaks Golf Course with his friends and family, scoring two holes in one on his favorite course.

He is preceded by his wife of 64 years, Sarah Frances, and is survived by his sons, Vernon "Carleton" and Joe Logan, both of Gainesville; his daughter, Betty Babcock, Palm Harbor, five grand-children, Adam, Joseph, Nicole, Joe, and Sara, and eight great-grandchildren.
