Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Vincent J. Challberg, 93, a resident of Davenport, will be 12:00 Noon, Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1923 Fillmore Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will greet friends today (Friday) from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, Davenport. There will be a prayer service at today at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be an additional visitation Saturday from 11:30am until the time of the service at the church. Vincent passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Vincent J. Challberg was born June 14, 1918 in Davenport, Iowa, a son of William and Loretta (Bloom) Challberg. He was united in marriage to Harriet Martens on June 12, 1943 in Walla Walla, Washington, and served his country as a Staff Sargent in the Army in World War II. He was awarded a Bronze Battle Star, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Vincent retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1979 after working 40 years as a supervisor in the Receiving Department.
Vincent was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, N.A.F.R.E. He was a great lover of Frank Sinatra and his music. He enjoyed all kinds of basketball, especially the Hawkeyes.
Vincent is survived by his wife, Harriet, Davenport, daughters, Nancy Ann (Gary) Calkins, Marion, IA and Laura Marie (Brad) Challberg Mundt, Moline, IL; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeremy) Johnson and Kelly Calkins, Marion, IA and Shay (Marty) Owings, Cedar Rapids, IA and 2 great-grandsons, Parker and Elijah Johnson, Marion, IA, and one great-grandbaby on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Marie Leuchtenburg, brothers, William Challberg and Deacon Ross Challberg. May they rest in peace.
