PRAGUE (AP) — Poet Viola Fischerova, known as the first lady of contemporary Czech poetry, has died. She was 75.

A spokeswoman at Prague's Motol hospital says Fischerova died Thursday where she was battling a terminal disease.

Born Oct. 18, 1935 in Brno, Fischerova emigrated in 1968 to Switzerland and after her husband's death moved to Germany where she worked for the U.S. funded Radio Free Europe.
