W.G. (Chip) Gillenwater, Jr., of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away peacefully at Virginia Beach General Hospital Thursday, January 12, 2012, with his family by his side. Chip was born May 16, 1947 in Appalachia, Virginia. He was the son of Winston G. and Mildred Gillenwater. After graduating from Strasburg High School in Shenandoah County, Virginia he attended VCU in Richmond, VA. Chip also served with the Army Reserve for 6 years during the Vietnam War period. In the summers while attending VCU he worked as an inspector on the construction of Interstate 81. After getting his degree from VCU he worked for Graybar Electric in Richmond, after which he went to work for the Thomas Harris Company, opening a friendship that lasted until his death. In Virginia Beach he started and grew W.G. Gillenwater and Associates, and maintained this business for some 25 years. His employees and clients were very important to him, while maintaining a friendly and service oriented agenda. Chip is survived by his wife, Soonie; his brother, Jim and sister-in-law Donna, nephew, Darris Ritenour and wife Tammy, niece, Deb Gillenwater Keller and husband Glenn, and great nephew, Corey Keller, all of Toms Brook, Virginia; and sisters-in-law, Mal Soon Park, from Korea and Sun Cha Story of Virginia Beach, VA. Chip loved to hunt, fish and golf. Having hunted with some of the best hunters in the country, he also fished with some of the best. Playing golf with some of the best was very special to him, as was belonging to the Elizabeth Manor and Broad Bay Country Clubs. Honoring his wishes a memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Memorial contributions may be sent to Strasburg Little League, P.O. Box 174, Strasburg, VA 22657 or Maur Brook Olive Ruritan Club, 31 Cattle Lane, Toms Brook, VA 22660. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
