Walter Becker, 88, of LaPorte, Indiana, died Wednesday December 8, 2010 at Golden Living Center Fountainview in LaPorte. He was born December 3, 1922 in Cismar, Germany, the son of Wilhelm Friedrich Carl Becker and Margarette (Scheef) Becker. Walter had lived in the LaPorte area, since 1936 coming from Chicago, Illinois. Walter was owner/operator for Becker Excavating. He was a member of Tracy Immanuel Lutheran Church, member and past chief of the Kingsbury Volunteer Fire Department, US Army Veteran during WW II and was a P.O.W. for eighteen months in Germany and a member of the American Legion Post #83 of LaPorte. On May 1, 1948, in Tracy, Indiana, he married Maryalice Wood Becker who preceded him in death November 6, 1995. He is survived by his four daughters - Judith J. Werner of LaPorte, IN., Susan (Paul) Wright of Paris, OH, Mary M. Becker of La Porte, IN, Brenda A. Becker of Michigan City, IN; two sons - Michael T. Becker of La Porte, IN, William J. Becker of La Porte, IN, nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son Walter Phillip Becker. one sister, Clara Becker-King, and one brother, William Becker. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. where the family will receive friends Thursday, December 9, 2010 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm & Friday, December 10, 2010 from 1:00 pm, until time of service. Services will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Friday December 10, 2010 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Billy Nickrand officiating. Interment will follow at the Tracy Cemetery, Hamlet, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tracy Immanuel Lutheran Church 8705 South 100 East, Hamlet, Indiana 46574 or American Cancer Society 601 West Edison Road Mishawaka, IN 46545.
