Walter John Pianka, Jr., 68, of the 2300 block of Dellwood Road, Chesapeake, VA, passed away January 31, 2011, in a local hospital. A native of Middletown, CT, he was the son of the late Louise S. and Walter J. Pianka, Sr. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as an Engineer. He was a member of the American Legion Post 280, Brentwood Chapter of the NARFE and was active in the Tidewater Chapter of the USO. He is survived by his wife, Christine R. Pianka; his daughter, Sabrina A. Hartley and husband Robert of Centreville, VA; a son, Walter J. Pianka III and wife Gabrielle of West Haven, CT; five brothers, Richard Pianka of Cromwell, CT, Peter Pianka of Cascade, MD, John Pianka of Contoocook, NH, James Pianka of Portland, CT and Edgar Pianka of East Hampton, CT; a sister, Susan Arnolt of Manassas, VA; three grandchildren, Walter IV, Riley and Katherine; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and a good friend, SSGT Dave P. Harriette, stationed in Korea. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 7 p.m. at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel.
