Dr. Walter Rector Woods of The Nottingham passed away peacefully on Thurs. September 20, 2012 at the age of 87yrs. Born September 27, 1924 in Castorland, NY to Floyed and Iva (Rector) Woods. He was predeceased by his wife Dr. May F. Kummer. Survived by six children, Kathleen Cloonan; Nancy(Robert) Wolcott; Sue (Patrick) Lewis; Amy (Richard) Jones; Larry (Debra) Woods, Betsy (Michael) Pfohl; brother, Fred (Marti) Woods; sister, Beverly Loyst; & 19 grandchildren: Katie, John, & Meghan Cloonan; Brad (Meredith), Andrew, & Carolyn Wolcott; Mike & Greg Lewis; Laura, Julia, Abby, & Brian Jones; Jared, Walter Ryan, & Melyssa Woods; Kaley, Delaney, Rory, & Remy Pfohl. Walt grew up in Carthage, NY and attended Cornell, Brooklyn College, & graduated from St. Lawrence U. in 1946; U. of Buffalo Dental School in 1949. He was an Eagle Scout with bronze palm, member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, Merchant Marines in WWII, Captain in US Air Force during Korean War. He practiced dentistry in Syracuse for 44yrs. with his wife, Dr. May F. Kummer, & Dr. Cliff Good. He was a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, Pres. of Amer. Society of Dentistry for Children; Pres. of Onondaga Co. Dental Society; Head of Professional Div. & Board member of Community Chest; Board & longtime member of YMCA; Dale Carnegie instructor; Chairman of Finance & Board member of Erwin Methodist Church, Board member of Pico Products, Board member of Teen Challenge, member of Syr. Rotary, & Lions Club. He was a marathon runner, avid outdoorsman, & loved worldwide travel, the Adirondacks, and finance. Friends may call at Burns Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 E. Genesee St., Syracuse, from 4-7 on Fri. September 28, 2012 a Memorial Service will be held at Erwin First United Methodist Church, 920 Euclid Ave., Syr., NY 13210 on Sat. September 29 at 11:00 am. Internment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Donations may be made to Erwin First United Methodist Church, 920 Euclid Ave., Syr., NY 13210 or Syracuse Teen Challenge, 124 Furman Street Syr., NY 13205.
