Wayne Albert Friend, 85, of Clearwater, Florida, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2011. He was born in Kittanning, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1926.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. His 2 ½ years of service were spent mostly in Europe in the Tank Corps. After the war, he served as the Master Sergeant of the Quartermaster Corps stationed in Nuremburg, Germany. He rose from Private to Master Sergeant in less than two years.
In 1988, Wayne retired from Waverly Press, Inc. in Easton, Maryland after 37 years. He previously had been a Maryland Sate Policeman for 2 ½ years serving mainly at the Easton and Salisbury Barracks and the Pikesville Headquarters.
He graduated from Kenwood High School in Baltimore County, then attended Lee College in Cleveland, Tennessee for 1 ½ years. His education was shortened when he returned to Easton due to his father-in-law's fatal illness.
Wayne served as Boy Scouts Scoutmaster of Troops 190 and 150 for over 16 years.
He was a member of the Church of God from 1949 until his death. Over the years, he was very active in many roles in the church. He served as a Sunday School teacher and officer of the Easton Church of God for 41 years. Wayne also served five years as Secretary-Treasurer and was on the church council for many years. He also was the church sexton for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Virginia; four sons, Rodney (Carol) of Kniebis, Germany; Jeffrey (Nancy) of Largo, Florida; Randall (Alexandra) of Easton, Pennsylvania; and Daryl of Largo, Florida; four grandchildren, Daniel, Leslie, Brady and Megan; and two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Brandon.
A Memorial Service will be held at Harbor Life Church of God, 2701 Rigsby Lane, Safety Harbor, Florida at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2011.
As he was a diabetic for over 40 years, the American Diabetes Association was very important to Wayne, and the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers.
