William Ronal Buesser, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, lawyer, boater, fisherman, adventurer and lover of life died suddenly of a heart attack December 24, 2010, in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Bill was 66. Bill had a zest for life and determination to participate as fully as possible in all its vicissitudes. When his appendix burst while hitchhiking through Germany as a college student, his doctors had difficulty preventing Bill from performing the appendectomy himself. When he and his wife traveled to Bali in 2009, they brought home not just photographs but nine native drums that became the percussive backbone of the next family gathering. Bill was born February 27, 1944 to Frederick G. Buesser, Jr. and Betty Ronal Buesser. He was a seventh generation Michigan resident; his great-grandfather, William Leland Carpenter, was a justice on the Michigan Supreme Court. Bill graduated from Detroit Country Day School in 1962, then earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1966, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. During these early years his adventurous spirit began leading him in unusual directions. He worked two summers at Sunlight Valley Ranch near Cody, Wyoming, where he milked cows and tended horses. Instead of flying to Europe to hitch-hike around the contintent, he snagged a berth on a tramp steamer out of Canada. In 1969 Bill earned a law degree from Wayne State University. He was proud to begin his legal career by joining his father's firm, Buesser, Buesser, Snyder and Blank, where his older brother Fred and uncle Anthony C. Buesser were already members. Later Bill branched out on his own, specializing in medical malpractice defense work. This allowed him to satisfy his intense interest in medicine, and gained him the profound respect of the doctors he represented for his broad knowledge of medical issues. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1991. Eventually Bill founded his own law firm, Buesser and Buesser, P.C, and earned additional law licenses to practice in Wyoming and Florida, two of his favorite places. Bill's ability to communicate concisely and clearly, his natural warmth and irrepressible humor, served his clients well. While Bill was a hardworking and gifted lawyer, he did not allow his career to define him. His interests were endless, his curiosity unbounded; he relished sharing his knowledge and skills with his family and friends, and especially with his four grandchildren, whose childish delight and exuberance were equally matched by their "Poppa Bill." Bill was a skillful boater in both fresh and salt water, an avid fisherman, and intrepid hunter. He could build furniture or repair an engine. He loved to cook, garden, and write poetry. In recent years he and his wife Diane learned Spanish, became yoga practitioners, performed family concerts on guitar and violin, and traveled to Spain, Thailand and Bali. Throughout his life, however, Bill returned regularly to the St. Clair River and his family roots sunk deep on Russell Island, where reuniting with extended family was a source of celebration and renewal. Bill is survived by his wife Diane; his children, Emily, Will and Alex; his grandchildren Olivia, Ben, Oscar and Stella; his brother Fred and sister Anne, his aunt Jo Buesser Pfender; and his uncle Tony Buesser. A memorial gathering will take place Wednesday, December 29, from noon to 3 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward Ave., Royal Oak. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial tributes to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 24359 Northwestern Hwy., Ste 225, Southfield, MI 48076 or Russell Island Foundation, c/o Kathy Engelhart, 1011 Satterlee Rd., Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304. Due to allergies and for health reasons, no flowers or perfume please.
