William O. Edward, 81, a resident of Albuquerque since 1962, died January 1, 2012. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou of 58 years; daughters Robin M. Edward, MD and Carol Myers, son John B. Edward and wife Gayle; and grandchildren Tiffany Lupcho, Kayla Myers, Kacey Myers and Jack and Bryce Edward. Bill is also survived by his sisters Shirley Tibbs and Elizabeth Joyce Hock of Bountiful, UT and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Yale College in 1951 and Yale Medical School in 1955. He then went on to post graduate training at the University of Utah followed by an Ophthalmology Residency at the University of California, San Francisco. He served in the Air Force as a Flight Surgeon at Kirtland Air Force Base in 1957-58. He was in the private practice of ophthalmology for 44 years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Frederick Cordes Eye Society, the AMA and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He was co-founder and organizer of the Aspen Retinal Detachment Society, an international organization for the study of the retina founded in 1972. Bill's top priority was serving his patients, and his passion for medicine was fueled by his desire to improve sight, preserve vision and prevent blindness. Bill served Yale for many years as a representative to the Association of Yale Alumni, the Board of Governors of the AYA and as president of the Yale Club of NM. In addition he was always a strong supporter of Mary Lou's endeavors in advocating for children's causes and family planning. An enthusiastic athlete, Bill enjoyed skiing and tennis and he especially relished weekend games with the same tennis buddies for over 40 years. Spending time at Snowmass CO with family and close friends was the highlight of his life. This included taking runs on The Big Burn, hiking favorite trails, picnicking by a gurgling stream or attending the Aspen Music Festival concerts and Aspen Institute programs. And just soaking it all in with his family and those he loved the most. Another favorite pastime was tending his prized cherry and apple trees and savoring the fruits of the RCJ Orchard. He was a man of all seasons! Memorial services will be held Friday January 6, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust Ave., NE at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers please consider sending a donation to All Faiths Receiving Home, 1709 Moon, NE, ABQ, 87112 or Planned Parenthood of New Mexico, 719 San Mateo, NE, ABQ 87108. Burial will take place in Salt Lake City, on January 9, 2012.
