William Scherer
Greenville, SC
William Donald Scherer, 78, went home to be with his Lord Jesus on February 1, 2012.
Born in Long Island, NY, he was the son of William W. and Elsie D. Scherer.
Mr. Scherer retired from Mead-Westvaco in 1994 as District Manager, Wood Procurement at the Luke, Maryland paper mill. He received his B.S. in Forest Management from State University of New York College of Environmental Resources and Forestry at Syracuse University in 1956. He was a retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve where he served aboard destroyers as Gunnery Officer. He was an elected Fellow in the Society of American Foresters and served as Chairman of the Allegheny Society of American Foresters. He was appointed Chairman of the Maryland Board of Registration for Foresters under Governor Harry Hughes and chaired the Maryland Tree Farm Committee. A member of the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association, he chaired the Forest Industry Committee and was a member of the Policy and Legislative Committee.
In addition to serving his profession and his country, he served his God in the local church as deacon, adult Sunday school teacher and youth director. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Nelson Scherer, and two daughters, Karen Asire and her husband Jeff, Jennifer Conn and her husband Garry; and five grandchildren, Peter Shamblin and his wife Missy, Katie Shamblin, Daniel Shamblin, Tyler Conn and Ryan Conn, all of Greenville.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Timothy Fund, Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC 29614.
