William J. "Bill" Tucker, 84, of Springfield, died at 12:44 p.m. on Friday, May 27, 2011 at his home. Bill was born September 10, 1926 in Springfield, the son of Charles and Amelia Knoll Tucker. He married Teresa A. Gilliam on May 4, 1992 in Springfield. Bill graduated from Lanphier High School and proudly served his country on the U.S.S. Antietam and the U.S.S. William M. Wood during WWII in the U.S. Navy. After leaving the Navy, he earned his Bachelor's of Science degree at Carthage College. He worked as an aquatic biologist for the IEPA. He was a Boy Scout leader and a member of the Masons for 50 years. He enjoyed bird watching and loved to work in his vegetable garden. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Teresa A. Tucker of Springfield; children, Kathryn (husband, Pierre) Edmonds of France, Susan (husband, Jim) Heath of Springfield, Jacob Tucker of Springfield, Elizabeth Tucker of Champaign and Susan (husband, Chris) Smith of Chicago; two step-children, Julie (husband, Chris) Adams of Indianapolis, IN and Laura (husband, Mark) Fisher of Reelsville, IN; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; sister, Charlene (husband, Henry "Bud") Kloppenburg of Springfield; and two nieces. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
