Speedy centerfielder who starred in two World Series championships dies at 69

Willie Davis, the speedy centerfielder who starred on two World Series champions for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was found dead yesterday in his Burbank, Calif., home, police said. He was 69.

Police said they did not believe foul play was involved.

Davis won three Gold Gloves and set a Dodgers record with a 31-game hitting streak in 1969. He started on World Series winners in 1963 and 1965.

The Dodgers lost the 1966 Series in four straight to the Baltimore Orioles. In Game 2 of that Series, in the last game of Sandy Koufax's Hall of Fame career, Davis committed a Series-record three errors in one inning when he lost one fly ball in the sun, dropped the next one, then overthrew third base.

He played for four other teams, and retired after the 1979 season with a career .279 average and 398 stolen bases.
