Wilma J. "Billie" Van Diest, age 84, was taken to be with her Heavenly Father while being cared for at the Christian Health Care Center on Monday, May 20. Born April 8, 1924, she was a lifetime county resident and the daughter of Carl and Nora Larson. She graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in 1947 and married Jim Van Diest on April 6, 1948. A home-maker, Billie was a life-long member of the Sumas Advent Christian Church and was the church organist for 70 years. She enjoyed baking and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Mrs. Van Diest is survived by her children Bonnie & Pete DeBruin, Patti & Phil Roorda, Mary & Mike Quinn, Jayne & Larry Roorda, Bette & Duane Bode, Bill & Diane Van Diest and Jim Van Diest; twenty-two grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren. Also, brother Rich & Kay Larson; in-laws Bob & Janice Van Diest, Clara Zoet and Helen Hogarth, and numerous other relatives. Besides her parents, Billie was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 2007, granddaughter Kasey Van Diest, grandson Chad Roorda, and in-laws Rich & June Heutink and Bob Hogarth. Visitation hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 24, at the Sumas Advent Christian Church. Memorial Funeral Services will be held at Noon on Saturday, May 25, in the Sumas Christian Reformed Church. Burial in Sumas Cemetery will precede the services. Memorials in Billie's name may be made to Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 2901 Squalicum Pkwy., Bellingham, WA 98225 or the Lighthouse Mission, PO Box 548, Bellingham, WA 98227.
