Woodrow "Woody" Smith
COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Woodrow "Woody" Smith, 89, will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012, at St. Martin's-in-the Fields Episcopal Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, assisted the family.
Woody, a loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Born May 4, 1922, in Sandy Springs, S.C., he grew up at Epworth Children's Home in Columbia, where he was an outstanding athlete during high school, especially in football. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, training young airmen on the B-17 Bomber. Following his time in the U.S. Air Force, he attended Columbia Commercial College, followed by a 38 year career with Southern Bell. He was a member of St. Martin's-in-the Fields Episcopal Church where he was a Scout Master and usher. As a Scout Master, Woody enjoyed many camping trips to Camp Barstow and "Lonesome Latitudes" with his fellow Scout Masters and Scout Troops.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Virginia Brown Smith, whom he married on November 6, 1946; sons, Albert Woodrow Smith, Charles Lawrence Smith, David Alexander Smith and his wife, Jean, all of Columbia; grandchildren, Matthew Townsend Smith, Katherine "Katie" McKinnon Smith, Lauren Elizabeth Smith, all of Columbia, James Nash Horky and Anna Elizabeth Horky, both of Georgia. He was predeceased by brothers, Albert C. Smith, Theodore Smith; sister, Monte Dunlap and daughter, Margaret C. "Peggy" Horky.
