Amy Harrison was born on January 29, 1910, a full-blooded Paiute, to Ida and Willie Harrison in Mono Lake, California. She spent her childhood around Mono Lake, particularly around the Farrington ranch area that was owned by her grandfather, Bridgeport Tom. Later in life, she attended government boarding schools at Greenville and Fort Bidwell. After completing school, she worked as a housekeeper at the Tioga Lodge, which is near Lee Vining, California. In 1929, she attended the Yosemite Indian Field Days where she met her husband, Alvin Rhoan.
They married in 1930 and moved into the old Indian Village near Indian Creek in Yosemite. It was there that their first child, Joseph Rhoan, was born. In 1932, they moved to the new Indian Village located near Yosemite Lodge where the remainder of their children, Finn, Patrick, and Beatrice, were born.
Amy worked for the Curry Company cleaning tents at Yosemite Lodge; and, also worked in the laundry room. Amy and Alvin moved to Wawona where she worked as a maid at the Wawona Hotel until her retirement in 1989. When her husband retired in 1965, the couple moved to Ahwahnee where she resided until her death on May 4, 2012.
Amy is preceded in death by her husband Alvin Rhoan; eldest son, Joseph Rhoan Sr.; and grandchildren Bernadine Mattson and Ronald Rhoan. Amy is survived by son Finn Rhoan and his wife Betty of Mariposa; her daughter Beatrice Wilsey of Ahwahnee; and son Patrick Rhoan and his wife Natalie of Mariposa; half-sister Flora Murphy of Schurz, Nevada; and, 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 3 great, great-grandchildren.

I want to express my family's heartfelt sympathy at the loss of our beloved Amy. I've known Amy for most of my adult life but would only see her probably once or twice a year; either at the Yosemite Big Time Gathering or at the Spiritual Walk. Every time I saw Amy she'd say "Barbara's daughter"; referring to my mother, Barbara Summers Hess - my grandmother, Marjorie Farrington Summers was Amy's first cousin. Amy would always ask about her relatives

I will miss her smiling face but am happy knowing that she is with her loved ones who have walked the "star trail" before her. May the Creator bless us all.

Safe journey, Auntie. You lived a long & extraordinary life. Anyone who lives as many years as you did, to see all the changes the world has gone thru is truly an amazing person. You are pretty much the last of our line & for that you will be greatly missed. I will never forget growing up & having you & Uncle Al in my life. Take all the love from your family with you on your journey to be with the Creator. Say 'Hi" to Uncle Al for me, too. Love you much. Rest well.

Gram, You have left so many memories in my heart - its terribly sad that I will never hug you or talk to you again. One of my fondest memories is when you called out my name, you always pronounced it as Leenay...it always reminded me of your grandma, Leeanna. Remember the rides we took and the pretty rocks we found? They didn't look so bright when I got them home. I always thought it was because you weren't there

When dad brought us to your house, your kitchen always smelled amazing. I will miss you!!

Grandma Amy was always an inspiration to my life. She taught my sister and I bead work, how to gather, prepare and make pine-needle baskets. I will miss working in the kitchen with her teaching us how to make torts (short for tortilla). I will miss all the times together down in Yosemite. Especially the picnics at Church Bowl. Grandma, you lived your life to the fullest. I will miss you and love you forever.

What a vibrant memory we have of Amy...it was at a meeting at Mono Lake about six years ago. Amy and Dorthy Andrews were sitting together at the meeting, visiting like 'little old ladies' do when they get together. The meeting started and their visiting continued on with chatter and laughter. Being as they both were a little hard of hearing, their enthusiasm grew louder and it was so cute and heart warming to see them enjoy each other so much. Amy enjoyed Alan's talking with her in Mono Lake Paiute. She was such a delight to be around.
