My deepest condolences to the Chase family. I was so fortunate to have moved to N. O. with my husband Brian Mickler back in 1977 and was introduced to Mrs. Chase by Jim Dombrowski, my husband's uncle who was very much involved with the civil rights movement in the 60's. Jim would hold his dinner art party at Dooky Chase restaurant every Dec. I was so fortunate to know Mrs. Chase. We will truly miss her beautiful smile! R.I.P.

To the lovely Chase family, and especially our old Loyola friend Dooky, Maureen and I are honored to have met your Mom at the restaurant, and are surely glad we did, while there was still time. And get this, in 2006 we were in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts and sure enough there was an article in their local daily newspaper--Leah was raising money for storm victims up there, and at first we were amazed, and then after thinking about it, it was sort of natural for her to help others. We know she's smiling down on her family now.

Dear Edgar ("Dooky")111,Leah and all Family:

I was so sad to hear about your mother's passing (wonderful, spirited Mrs. Leah Chase). We are all so blessed
to have experienced her existence and definitely her award winning "hit and whip" in the kitchen. Her life is one never ever to be gone unnnoticed!
It's something special even beyond Nola and Dooky Chase that your mother "light a spark of zest and hope"
for the civil rights of many in our world!
Yes, she rocks...what a lady. Dooky Chase has held a warm, "feel like home" place in my heart...
God speed.

She gave us history of how the restaurant came about and it was like walking into history where major life changing decisions were being made regarding our civil rights. It was awesome! It was truly an honor being there. I just want to thank the Chase family for all that the family has done at the direction of their mother. May our Lord and Savior give you great comfort in the passing of your matriarch that did wonderful things while she was here on earth! Trust in the Lord!

The first time I heard the name Leah Chase was on The Julia Child Cooking Show. Miss Leah fried some chicken. I believe she demonstrated how to cut up a whole chicken as well. Her recipe was what I used to fry chicken for the very first time. And let me tell you it was the best I had ever had. Throughout the years I have tried different recipes but none compare to Miss Leah

She has another recipe for fried chicken I plan on trying very soon. I want to thank you, Miss Leah, for your advice and cooking techniques. I was never taught how to cook but you showed me how to have the patience and love for cooking. God bless you

To the family and friends of Miss Leah, you are all in my prayers.

Leah welcomed me into the kitchen and sat patiently twice, with a broad smile on her face. She told me the stories of New Orleans and Southern Louisiana as seen through her eyes - so my novels could be authentic. Leah Chase reminded me of my mother. Always a smile to share - always a good word - always a helping hand up. God speed, Ms Leah.

I never had the chance or opportunity to meet her in person..but she and I carried on a telephone relationship like no other.. at least 3 times a week I'd call Dooky Chases's restaurant..and she'd answer.. Id'say Mrs. Leah..it's me Sabrina from the Travelodge..she'd say yeah baby.. I'd say I got 4 for you today.. or how many ever I'd sing praises about her restaurant not because I'd been there, but because I knew without any doubt that she had fed and brought so many along with her that I could not help but honor my knowledge of her.. SHE will rest in Glory.. AND be found cooking right next to Jesus..lol.. it has been a privilge in my life just to even speak to her.. and I thank her for being so kind and cordial to do so..

As long as we keep the great memories, love and the beautiful things we learned from those who passed away to people in the world who deserve that energy. The love ones who passed continue to live on through us in this world. You will always be here with us Aunt Leah and I will be greatly missed. You are now in that golden kitchen with Uncle Edgar and Grandfathers Jesse and Clive.

Leah Chase, you are my hero and a beloved icon in our community. You gave me so much love and shared wisdom that was always on target. When we chatted, you made me feel like there was no one else in the universe except the two of us. I'll miss your smile and your voice saying, "Where have you been? I miss you!" If I was excited about something, you were excited about it, too! If I was mad or disappointed about something, you were in there with me, too. I'll color my Sprite for you tonight. I love you. - Shana

I had the sincere pleasure of getting to know Leah's daughter, also "Leah," who came to Paris to sing after Katrina happened. Then later, I had the good fortune of meeting Ms. Chase once at the restaurant a few years ago when I was visiting my home town, "Noo Awlins." The city will never be the same without her and she will be forever missed, but her legacy will be in her fine cuisine that will live on for eternity. My fondest condolences to the entire family and everyone who enjoyed her cooking.
