Message From The Family

The O'Connor family would like to thank all of Barbara's many friends and family who were such an important part of her life We would also like to express our deep gratitude to the many health professionals who were wonderful to Barb over many years

Barbara Jane (Meade) O'Connor died Thursday, September 5, 2019 in Ft Myers, FL. She was the daughter of Dorothy Helen Bush and Arthur Ward Meade and was born June 15, 1934 in Syracuse, NY. She spent much of her early childhood in Pennsylvania, where she lived in Butler and at the Bethesda Children's Home in Meadville. When Barbara was fourteen years old, she moved back to Syracuse and attended Syracuse Central High School graduating in 1952 where she was a member of the girl's volleyball team and an officer in her sorority.

As a high school freshman, Barbara started working and saving for nursing school. She realized her goal, attending Crouse Irving Nursing School upon graduation from high school. Barbara loved her years in nursing school, met many lifelong friends there and was elected president of her senior class. After graduation in 1955, Barbara worked for many years as an RN in Syracuse and Seneca Falls, NY.

In September of 1954, while Barb was a senior at Crouse and Tom O'Connor was attending SU they met at the Varsity. They eloped five weeks after they met and kept their marriage a secret for seven months until Barb finished nursing school. They were happily married for 34 years until Tom's death in 1988. Tom and Barb raised their family in Syracuse, Seneca Falls, and Glenmont NY..

Barbara's nursing training was vital as a volunteer First Responder with the Bethlehem EMS. She also volunteered for many years with the Amercian Red Cross Blood Drive. Her love of bird watching brought her to Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, where she volunteered for many years.

Barb traveled all over the world, including Africa, Antarctica and the far east. She enjoyed Jeopardy, a good glass of wine, any game (especially pinochle), and Syracuse football. Barbara was also a voracious reader and a ranked bridge player.

Barbara will be fondly remembered by her large extended family and many dear friends for her generous spirit, humor, kindness, laughter, and her joy of life. Her granddaughters will always remember the special outings they shared with their Nana.

Barbara is survived by her four children, daughter Nancy O'Connor Evans and husband John of Tiburon, CA; daughter Susan O'Connor of Cape Coral, FL; Thomas O'Connor of Cohoes, NY; and Anthony O'Connor of Ft Myers, FL; Granddaughters, Caroline Meade Evans of Mill Valley, CA and Polly O'Connor Evans and husband Jakub Karas of Port Chester, NY; brothers, Ret Lt Col Arthur Meade and wife Mary of Edinboro, PA and Robert Meade and wife Michelle of Nazareth, PA.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Thomas Joseph O'Connor who died in 1988; sister Nancy Meade Elliff; brother Don Meade; and brother James Ward Meade.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
