Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Nancy by adding your memories and photos.

Nancy Chiles Brugos was born on December 7,1940 in Blackstone, Virginia. She was a breast cancer survivor, having fought and won several serious health issues in the past 23 years. But, with great sadness, at the age of 79, on July 31st, she was suddenly taken from this world to begin a new journey here after. She will be reunited with her beloved parents Mavis A. and James M. Chiles, niece Holly Elizabeth Chiles and many other beloved family members and friends.

She married John J. Brugos, Jr. of Blackstone, VA. They married in South Carolina in 1958. After 29 years of marriage they divorced in 1987. He preceded her in death.

Nancy graduated from Blackstone High School in 1958. She was a dedicated employee in healthcare administration and began her career at Blackstone Medical Center, later renamed as Blackstone Family Practice Center. She worked there 23 years. She then joined Virginia Urology in Richmond, VA where she was promoted to office manager of the surgical group. Years later, she decided to relocate closer to her brother and the beach in Beaufort, NC. There she managed Kid's Rule Pediatric office. In 2008, she relocated to Asheville, NC to be closer to her grandchildren. She was employed at Care Partners Private Duty Services in Asheville, retiring in spring of 2018.

Nancy leaves behind her family to celebrate her life; son John J. and wife Sylvia Brugos of New Bern, NC; daughter Paige and husband Dr. John Henretta of Asheville, NC; and brother Ernest Chiles of Beaufort, NC. She is survived by five grandchildren: Justin, Jarrett, Kendall, Kellyn, and Ross. Her grandchildren were the center of her world and dearly loved. They called her "Nana" and "NeNe". She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister. She was our rock. Nancy also leaves behind her faithful companion, Lilly, a King Charles Cavalier rescue who was always by her side.

Nancy enjoyed traveling, reading, sports, nature, and animals. She especially enjoyed feeding yard birds, befriending a pair of cardinals, named Clarence and Charlotte. Faith was a big part of her life attending Biltmore Baptist Church. Besides spending time with her family and friends, vacationing at the beach was her happy place. She was truly loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Groce Funeral Home in Arden, NC is handling her arrangements.
Date and location to celebrate Nancy's life is to be decided. In lieu of flowers, donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation or your local Humane Society or SPCA would fulfill her wishes.

Paige and Johnny, I was saddened to hear of the loss of your mom. Many years ago, she worked with my father Dr. Epes Harris at the Blackstone Family Practice Center. I remember her as a kind and gentle person- beautiful inside and out. Hugs and prayers to you all.

Nancy was a wonderful woman. A true classy lady! I had the privilege of working with her at CarePartners before she retired. She made every day enjoyable. The world will not be the same without her ❤

So many years of laughter and love working together at Virginia Urology - Nancy's ability to tell a story or share a memory was unmatched. She was a kind and faith-filled woman with such a gentle way of making all of our patients feel nurtured. Nancy taught me so much - how to be a good friend, how to be a fighter (her determination to beat breast cancer was an inspiration to all of us who accompanied her on that journey), how to handle stress with grace. Heartfelt condolences to Nancy's brother, Ernest, and her children and grandchildren. She loved you all so much! May the memories of the happiest times you shared with sweet Nancy comfort you as you grieve her loss. Know that you are in my prayers.

I am sorry to read about Nancy's. She was a major part of my career at Virginia Urology. She kept me on track and managed me quite well. During her breast cancer battle she handled it all with grace. May of her family be comforted in knowing such a lovely and kind person. Best wishes, Dr. Ike Koziol

Rest In Peace my Friend, we had just reconnected after so many years when I moved from Blackstone and I lost you again. You kept my baby girl for me when she was just 4 weeks old so her brother could have his tonsils taken out. For that I was always grateful and for your friendship. So long my friend till we meet again!
