Tribute & Message From The Family

Beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Godchild, Brother-in-Law, Uncle, Great-Uncle and Friend

Nicholas A. Tripoulas, PhD., age 64, beloved husband of 34 years to Cindy (nee Kosiba); loving father of Elaine and Emily; dear brother of John, Chris, and Emil; beloved godchild, brother-in law, uncle, great-uncle, and friend of many. Nick's passion was any, and all, Science. Proud graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH (BS, Chemistry; PhD., Biochemistry). Completed Fellowships with Johns Hopkins University and Cleveland Clinic (Cell Biology and Molecular Biology). Nick was a Project Scientist with Cleveland Clinic for over 26 years during which time he was recognized as a valuable member of the Safety & Quality Team, serving an instrumental role in the formation and success of the Institutional Biosafety Committee, and impacting overall caregiver safety. Nick further contributed to Science by conducting research in the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Sciences department and educating medical students at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. He was an icon at Cleveland Clinic, being known for strolling around campus and engaging in conversation with everyone. Nick will serve as an "enduring legacy" at Cleveland Clinic.
Outside his work with Cleveland Clinic, Nick loved space and lunar phenomena and would drag his daughters, Elaine and Emily, outside to observe eclipses, and other sights even if they were knee-deep in homework. Nick relished spending time with his wife at Cleveland Clinic events, Cleveland Orchestra concerts, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. He was also an avid runner, participating in multiple marathon races. Nick was a Greek parent who was very proud of his heritage and shared this heritage with his family through Greek festivals and trips to Greece, and he maintained a lifelong fondness for the community of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Rocky River. Nick will be remembered by his family for his love for Science; pride in his wife and daughters; devotion to Cleveland baseball and statistics; and fondness for hippos and elephants at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Nick will be loved and missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

Condolence & Memory Journal

I remember "little" Nick. We used to play football in front of his house, in the street, on Dale Avenue. "Nick, hike me the ball, nobody will cover you and I'll hit you with a pass over the center." It must have been 1965 to 1969. John, if you see this, give me a call (818) 644-5859.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Nick. He was a wonderful mentor to me at Cleveland Clinic and one of the most kind and compassionate people I have ever met. Sending prayers to the family and friends of such a wonderful person.

I really got to know Nick over the 10 years we served together on the IACUC committee at the Lerner Research Institute. He was always so mild-mannered yet very professional and responsible. I always enjoyed bumping into him and chatting about baseball and our children. He was very proud of his daughters. He was such a dedicated contributor to our science culture at Lerner, always helping to keep us compliant with the daunting myriad of regulations. I will miss his kindness and gentle nature.

I got to know Nick over many years working at Lerner and Cleveland Clinic. Fond memories of eating lunches with him in the hospital cafeteria, he and I ran into each other a lot there. Talked about science, sports, but I most enjoyed hearing his stories about his family roots in Greece and the colorful national and local politics there. We also lived in the same suburb so he gave me good advice about teachers etc regarding our kids as they went up through the grades. He was very proud of his family.

As a colleague, I could always count on Nick for advice and guidance whenever I needed help with unfamiliar research projects. He was always willing to go the extra mile, had a smile at the ready, and could chit chat with ease when running into me in a random hallway or sidewalk on main campus. Such a kind soul...wishing his family peace and grace as they grieve, and much joy to Nick as he transitions into his next journey.

He was such a nice person to work with and always had a smile or a kind word. The world needs more people like him! Our hearts go out to his family.

I was very sad to hear the news of my fellow Greek colleague's passing. Nick was a very honest, diligent, and kind person to work with and I valued him as a colleague. Always with a smile and always willing to help and make sure things got done well and all bases were covered. We will miss his ethos and his smile from our workplace here at the Lerner Research Institute of Cleveland Clinic. May he rest in peace and may his family and friends remember him fondly and proudly.

Nick was my labmate when I was a graduate student in Paul Fox's lab in the Department of Cell Biology in 2002. He never hesitated to help out and lend advice to a confused student, our relationship grew through my years at the Clinic. Much of the science I practice today can be traced back to lessons I learned from Nick.

Since then, whenever we crossed paths, He always asked me how things were and asked about my kids. Our discussions of Cleveland sports were never short of interesting. I am proud to call Nick my friend and will miss him dearly.

I met Nick in 1995 when I began working as a senior tech and he was a postdoc in a lab on my floor. He was one of the first people to reach out to me and offer to help me in any way that he could, and I was so grateful for his calming presence at that point in my career. We developed a lasting friendship, and we always stopped to talk (most often about our kids but also about our careers) whenever we ran into each other in the hallway. Nick will be greatly missed; he was an outstanding scientist and a truly kind and caring friend and mentor to many at the Cleveland Clinic. I am so sorry for your loss and share in your sadness.

I met Nick right after joining Cleveland Clinic in 2006. He was such a wonderful resource and always had time for my questions. I then had the pleasure of working with him as a biosafety officer for several years; his knowledge and passion continued to amaze me. I could always count on Nick for help and a friendly smile. I will miss getting to catch up with him about work and our families when we'd bump into one another on campus. My sincerest condolences to his family, he spoke of you all often and was so proud!

I fondly remember chatting with Nick in the hallways as we both did our jobs for many years on NE6 and had offices close to one another. Nick was a wealth of information on so very many topics that you wondered how he learned it all. It was always fun to chat with him and I would have to pull myself away to continue my day. I pray that fond memories will sustain his friends and family during the difficult days of adapting to his loss.

I met Nick when I joined the department at the Cleveland Clinic in 2013. Even though I didn't directly work on the same projects or same areas as Nick, I had many interactions and conversations with him throughout the years. It didn't take long to realize that he had an amazing level of knowledge. He also had a knack for talking your ear off. He was kind, funny, courteous, and an extremely easy person to talk to. He was highly respected by all that knew him at the Cleveland Clinic. He will be sadly missed and my sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.
