Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother

Michael F. Velez "Mike", 64, of Lorain County, passed away Monday, April 19, 2021 from complications due to COVID at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.
Michael was a graduate of Admiral King High School. He enjoyed his time at the Elyria Salvation Army (church) as a facilities coordinator. He had a special connection with the people that walked through the door, no one was a stranger. If someone was hungry, he would feed them; if they were troubled, he would talk and offer to pray with them. His life experiences formed in him a heart of service.
He became a Salvation Army Senior Solider and enjoyed his fellowship with his church family. He served hot meals, assisted his wife Lucy with The Chronicle's Not Forgotten Box, and with her even taught the Teen Sunday School class known as the "Breakfast Club."
Growing up, he loved sports… street football, basketball, baseball, boxing, and martial arts. As a dad, his house became the neighborhood hangout to shoot hoops. The kids were safe, encouraged and always fed! He enjoyed playing Jeopardy with his daughter, Erin and spending many hours on the phone with his daughter, Colleen. His favorite past times were cooking, swimming, or fishing with family and friends.
Mike is survived by his wife of eight years, Lucy Velez; daughters, Erin Velez and Colleen (Frank Witherspoon) Velez, Cierra and Mckenzie Goldsmith; very special grandson, Bryce Witherspoon; the Marrero family; many loved nieces, nephews and cherished children he helped raise and mentor; brother, Steve and sisters, Amy and Liz; extended families and friends.
He is in heaven with his mother, Judy; brother, David; sister, Nancy and Lucy's daughter, Kyrsten.
Mike's wishes were to be cremated, internment will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. A Celebration of Mike's Life will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be forwarded to the Elyria Salvation Army Corp., 716 Broad Street, Elyria, Ohio 44035 or for Bryce's college fund, please contact Colleen Velez at cfvelez14@gmail.com.
Mike, you touched the lives of many. The day you passed away it rained - and the heavens were opened to receive you.

My heart & Ashleigh's broke when we heard this sad news! Our thoughts, prayers go out to you, the family, and all Mike has touched!

You are in our prayers! To say we lost an Angel is an under statement! Mike was one of a kind!

I found out about Mike today from Lucy, and i was in shock, and speechless. Mike was a friend, a "big brother", someone who would come running if i needed help with pricing the correct items during our church sale, or just to hang out. We could sit for hours, and just gab about anything, and everything, from sports to our wives lol. I will miss you "big brother", and i will see you again someday. Rest easy, rest peacefully.

This one hits hard. In a time when I had no father figure in my life, you were there to show me that real good fathers exist. The summer Colleen and I were attached at the hip you always welcomed me into your home with open arms and treated me as part of the family. You always knew the right things to say at the right times and I know how blessed anyone is who crossed your path as I was. You will be truly missed. I hope you are rejoicing in heaven!
