Tribute & Message From The Family

Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to James by adding your memories and photos.

James was born on March 19, 1939 in Commerce, TX to the late Newnun and Mary Blackburn and entered into the arms of the Lord on March 22, 2012. James was the Deputy Chief of the Dallas Fire Department where his firefighter brothers called him "Blackie". He was also the chief of the Temple Fire Department for 5 years. James enjoyed spending time with his family, RVing, traveling, building and was what you would call a "Jack of all trades". If he wasn't hunting he was working in his shop. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Mabank. He was loved by many and will be truly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife Joann of Mabank, daughter Tamara Wimmer of Denton, son James Mark Blackburn and wife Melinda of Mabank, three grandchildren; James Michael Blackburn, Tessa Wimmer and Trent Wimmer, one sister Peggy Burns and husband Robert of Jacksonville, nieces, nephews, other family and many loving friends.

Condolence & Memory Journal

I was sitting at my computer this morning thinking of the Blackburn family and my Mother and Daddy, Wilford and Lola Burns. What wonderful good friends they had. I decided to google James and Joann. This is what I found and am so saddened to find out that I will never see James again in this world. I wish I had known. To the Blackburn family: Know I have wonderful and special memories of your family. God Bless You all.

Joanne, Tammy, Mark and Peggy, I was so sorry to learn of James' passing. I am Inez's youngest daughter and I remember all of you visiting us, especially my Grandmother, Aunt Cora Young to you. It is so hard to think of James not with us any longer. He was a great man. Over the years I have met many Dallas Firemen who spoke very highly of James. May God bless all of you at this sad time. Wish we were close enough for a visit. Tammy, I live just out of Denton and teach at TWU. My e-mail is jomurphy@suddenlink.net. I would love to see you some time and especially if your mom comes to visit.
Love to all of you, Jo Walker Murphy

James and I both came to work in the DFD in early 1960. James was a strong leader and good influence in the Department throughout his career.

I believe that his strong influence helped others to reach their higher potential and become building blocks for one of America's greatest Fire Departments.

James was a great man. I have no doubt that his good influence lives on in the DFD today.

Life Stories

I worked at the Fire Dept with Chief Blackburn for many year as the Workers Comp Cordinator. He was always so easy to work with and very helpful. He always had a great smile for everyone and a good word. I know his family and friends will miss him. God Bless Lina Parker

I said I was James' niece, but I'm actually his cousin by marriage.
I'm sure God brought James home to him so he can say the blessing at Gods own table.

When I think of James, I always think of his voice. He had one of the best speaking voices I've ever heard.
I always loved hearing him say the blessing before the meals at any family get together.
He will be missed.
