Tribute & Message From The Family

Dr. Robert K. Su, 71, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 21, 2013. The son of Dr. Chien-chuan Su and Mrs. Su-en Su, he was born in Taipei, Taiwan and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from Taipei Medical College School of Pharmacy followed by a Doctor of Medicine from Nagasaki University School of Medicine in Nagasaki, Japan. After completing his Internship in Philadelphia and Residency in Richmond, Dr. Su settled in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he practiced Anesthesiology at Maryview and Portsmouth General Hospitals, as well as Acupuncture and Pain Management in his private practice, Virginia Pain Clinic. Dr. Su co-founded the Virginia Medical Acupuncture Society, and provided consultation to the Virginia State Board of Medicine in founding the Advisory Board on Acupuncture and serving as an inaugural Board member. In addition to his pioneering work with acupuncture, Dr. Su researched and wrote two books: The Health Care Mess in 1994 and his labor of love, Carbohydrates Can Kill, in 2009. Known to his extended family as Uncle Bear, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Martha; his four elder sisters, Lila Doong, Ling-mai Lan, Lillian Chen (Yancy), Judy Shinn (Bill), and his younger brother, Alexander Su (Josephine); his son, Henry (Dorothy Pater), his daughters, Cynthia Roberts (Jeffrey) and Linda; his grandchildren, Andre, Margot, and Jeremy; and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he cherished as his own children. Visitation will be at Loving Funeral Home, 3225 Academy Ave., Portsmouth, on Friday, December 27, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A family-only committal service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Norfolk Botanical Garden, where he loved to take walks with his family.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Dr. Su was one of the nicest, genuine, caring people I have ever met. He took care of me and my husband over the years. I called him the "miracle man". He knew exactly what to do to have you back to your old self in no time at all. He was also a patient of ours (Ophthalmology) and I enjoyed taking care of him and his family when the need arose. I just found out yesterday of his passing. I wish I had known. He will be truly missed!

Over the past year, Dr. Su had become a friend as well as a medical provider.
I will miss our discussions very much.
My prayers are with his family as they deal with his unexpected passing.

I had the honor of meeting Dr. Su in my early years of teaching at Churchland Primary. Although a very busy man he was always gracious and there whenever we needed a conference. I know he will be missed. Thoughts and prayers to you all .
